Shooting.

--One night last week a free negro woman, residing near the corner of 23d and Main streets, was sitting quietly up stairs with a child in her arms, when a gun was fired in the neighborhood, and a large nail crashed through the weatherboarding and penetrated her left arm, above the elbow. As a matter of course, great consternation succeeded the event, but as soon as the excitement subsided in some degree, a physician was sent for and the nail was extracted from the limb. The gun must have been heavily loaded, to have driven the nail through the house with such force. It was a novel idea, too, to use a nail instead of a bullet. It is not known whether the gun was fired at random or not, though the police have some suspicions in regard to the matter. The woman and child certainly had a narrow escape.
