NEWTON KYME (“Calcaria”) Yorkshire, England.

A Roman town, first disclosed by air photography, ca. 3.2 km N of Tadcaster. Excavation has shown it to be of the simplest type, rectangular in plan with earthen rampart and outer ditch. The pottery of signal station type is late 4th c.

The Antonine Itinerary places Calcaria at a distance from Eboracum (York) that would seem to place it at Tadcaster, and the name Calcaria (limestone quarries) would be suitable to this location since Tadcaster lies close to a ridge of magnesian limestone that has been worked for centuries. However, since finds of Roman date here are limited to a few odd coins from the churchyard, identification of the site with
