APE´NE

APE´NE (ἀπήνη), a carriage with four wheels (τετράκυκλος ἀπήνη, Hom. Il. 24.324), generally drawn by mules (Hom. Il. l.c.; Od. 6.72; Paus. 5.9.2; Schol. ad Pind. O. 5.6), though Sophocles (O. T. 802) speaks of an ἀπήνη πωλική. (Hermann, Griech. Ant. iv.3 p. 483.) [CURRUS]
