PECU´NIA

PECU´NIA In the use of this word for “money,” we have a record of the fact that in primitive times in Greece and Italy values were calculated in sheep and oxen. Stamped money was introduced into Asia Minor and Greece in the 7th century; into Rome in the 5th. For the history of Greek coins, see PONDERA; for that of Roman coins, see As; while a few general remarks as to the use of money in antiquity will be found under NUMUS.
