DEUCALEDONICUS OCEANUS

DEUCALEDONICUS OCEANUS (Δουηκαλεδόνιος Ὠκεανός), the name given by Ptolemy to the ocean on the north of the Britannic Islands. “The table” of the British Isles “is bounded on the north by that” ocean “which is called Hyperborean or Deucaledonian” (8.3.2). The word occurs again in Marcianus Heracleota, whose text, for these parts at least, is but an abridgment of Ptolemy's. In another part of his work, this latter calls it “Deucaledonian or Sarmatic.” [DICALEDONAE; PICTI.]
