SCAPTE HYLE
SCAPTE HYLE (
Σκαπτὴ ὕλη,
Plut. Cim. 4,
de Exilio, p. 605; Marcellin. Vit. Thucyd. § 19), or the “foss wood,” situated on the confines of Macedonia and Thrace, in the auriferous district of Mt. Pangaeum, to which Thucydides was exiled, and where he composed his great legacy for all ages--the history of the war in which he had served as general.
