A.push up or forth, ἀνώσαντες πλέον (sc. ναῦν) they pushed off from shore and sailed, Od.15.553; “ἀ. τὴν πόλιν εἰς τοὺς πολεμίους” Th.8.93:—Pass., to be thrust upwards, Arist.Pr.931b35.
2. push back, Hp.Art.80; “ὅστις σῖτον . . ἐσαχθέντα ἀνωθεοίη” SIG37 A10（Teos): —Med., repel, repulse, “οὗτοι ἦσαν οἱ βασιλέα . . ἀνωσάμενοι” Hdt.7.139, cf. 8.109.
3. support, of buoyant water, Olymp. in Mete.81.23, al.
4. metaph., hand over, “τὰ πράγματα πρὸς τὸν δῆμον” D.C.52.17; refer, “τὰς ἐλαττώσεις εἰς τοὺς στρατηγήσαντας” Id.Fr.43.18.
