ἀσυ_λ-ία ἡ,
A.inviolability, i.e.,
1. safety to the person, of suppliants, “ἀ. βροτῶν” A.Supp.610; of competitors at games, Plu.Arat.28; in Inscrr., as a privilege bestowed on one who has deserved well of the state, “εἶμεν δὲ αὐτῷ ἀτέλειαν καὶ ἀ. καὶ κατὰ γᾶν καὶ κατὰ θάλασσαν” IG7.11 (Megara), cf. 2.551.80, 5(1).1226 (Lacon.), etc.
2. sanctity, inviolability of character, “ἀ. ἱερέως” D.H.11.25.
3. of a place of refuge, right of sanctuary, Plb.4.74.2; “ἀσυλίαν παρέχειν” Plu. 2.828d; freq. in Inscrr., “ἀ. πόλεως καὶ χώρας” IG12(5).1341 (Paros), etc.
4. exemption from contributions, Ph.2.250.
