A.over against, face to face, in Hom. mostly in the phrases, ἄ. μάχεσθαι fight man to man, Il.19.163; ἄ. ἰδεῖν look before one, ib.13.184, cf.E.Alc.877 (lyr.); θεοῖς ἄ. ἐῴκει he was like the gods to look at, Il.24.630; “εἴδεται ἄ. πελιδνή” Nic.Th.238; ἄ. τιτύσκεσθαι aim straight at them, Od.22.266, cf. Pi.N.6.27; “ἄ. πρός τινος” Epigr.Gr.223.4 (Milet.).
II. as Prep. with gen., like ἀντί, over against, “Ἤλιδος ἄ.” Il.2.626; ἄ. παρειάων σχομένη κρήδεμνα . . before her cheeks, Od.1.334; “ἄντ᾽ ὀφθαλμοῖϊν” 4.115; also of persons, ἄ. σέθεν before thee, to thy face, ib.160, cf. 22.232; so in Il.21.331, with a notion of comparison, confronted with thee; ἕρπει ἄ. τῶ σιδάρω τὸ καλῶς κιθαρίσδεν rivals it, Alcm.35.
