--Passengers by the
Central train yesterday bring contradictory reports about the landing of Yankee troops at
White House Point, on the
Potomac; but the following, from the Lynchburg Republican, seems reliable:
Through a gentleman direct from
Alexandria, a citizen of that place, we learn that about two thousand Federal troops have been landed at the
White House, on the
Virginia side of the
Potomac, about seventeen miles below
Alexandria, and about the same distance from
Manassas Junction.
They intend fortifying themselves strongly at this point, and a much larger force is expected to be landed in a few days.
The bridges on the
Orange Road, from
Alexandria towards the
Junction, are being rebuilt, and the road otherwise repaired, with the view of making use of the road; and it was generally believed that an advance movement of the troops from
Alexandria, co-operating with those stationed at the
White House, would be made in a few days.
