Mayor's Court.
--The subjoined is a list of the cases before the
Mayor yesterday morning:
‘
Lucy, a free negro, was charged with stealing a lot of clothes from another free negro woman.
In addition to the complainant's testimony against the ceased,
Miss Virginia Edwards, a while woman, who said she was only fourteen years of age, but looked to be about thirty, stated that she lived in the same house with the loser of the articles, and saw Lucy when she came down with the things under her arm. There being no witnesses for the defence, the case was sent on for examination before the Hustings Court, and the prisoner remanded to jail.
’
Bridget Byan and
Martin Taylor were charged with feloniously receiving 12 bushels of corn, 6 blankets, a lot of shirts, and 2 muskets, belonging to the
Confederate States.
Lieut. Trabue, having charge of the department from which the corn had been stolen obtained a search warrant, which he placed in the hands of
officer Granger for execution, and going with him to Bridget's house, succeeded in finding not only his corn, but various other articles belonging to the
Government.
Bridget vehemently denied at first having any corn in her house; but afterwards, when several of the missing bags were resurrected, acknowledged that there were others about the promises, but that they had been brought there by soldiers.
Taylor was a guard at the depot on the night the corn was stolen, and being found in Bridget's house, in his nightclothes, on the night when the search warrant was executed, he was taken under arrest as a person suspected of having something to do with the robbery — He is a member of
Capt. Whittington's artillery, but was originally a Yankee deserter.--
Mrs. Ryan was remanded to jail in default of security for her appearance for further examination before the Hustings Court.
Taylor was committed for want of security to keep the peace and be of good behavior.
A charge was preferred against Dennia O'Kieffe of threatening to assault and beat
Mary Preston; but there being no evidence to sustain the allegation, he was dismissed.
Sarah,
Abbey, Lizzie, and
Charlotte, slaves of
Mrs. Louisa Allen, were each whipped for harboring Ella, a runaway, belonging to
James L. Bray.
Ella acknowledged that she had for several days sojourned with
Mrs Allen's negroes.
