Argilētum
A district in Rome, extending from the south of the Quirinal to the Capitoline and the
Forum. It was chiefly inhabited by mechanics and booksellers (
Mart.i.
4). Varro derives the name from
argilla, “potter's
clay,” and some make it
Argi letum, as referring to the hero Argus
(
Verg. Aen. viii. 346).
