BASILEIA

BASILEIA (βασίλεια), a festival with games open to all Greeks, held at Lebadea in Boeotia, in honour of Zeus Basileus. Diodorus (15.53) tells us it was instituted at the command of an oracle of Trophonius after the battle of Leuctra, 371 B.C. (See Foucart, Revue Archéol. 1875, i. p. 110.)
