BASILEIA
BASILEIA (
βασίλεια), a festival
with games open to all Greeks, held at Lebadea in Boeotia, in honour of Zeus
Basileus. Diodorus (
15.53) tells us it was
instituted at the command of an oracle of Trophonius after the battle of
Leuctra, 371 B.C. (See Foucart,
Revue Archéol.
1875, i. p. 110.)
