The following spirited and patriotic poem is from a talented Virginia lady, of whom a respected correspondent, who communicates it to us, says: ‘"She is the lineal descendant of two of the signers of the Declaration which gave sovereignty to Virginia.--By every antecedent a free and proud-hearted woman, it is natural she should look with concern on the action of this State at this time, and that her patriotic sentiments should burst forth in the ardor of song:"’
Sic Semper Tyrannis.
‘ Up, up with her flag, come wave it on high;The flag of Virginia unfurl to the sky.
Shall it trail is the dust, with it's motto so proud?
Sic Semper Tyrannis — proclaim it aloud.
Wha, matter it now? 'tis no King on his throne,
Whose will speaks your fate by his power alone.
Will ye bow to the legions who scoff at your right?
No — sons of Virginia, come arm for the fight.
Did the stars and the stripes lead you on to your glory?
Twas the flage of Virginia, go read its proud story:
Will you lower it now to the Puritan's power?
No — sons of great heroes, now, now is your hour.
Great Mother of States, such once was your name.
Will you cover it now with the blackest of shame?
No — lead the proud van of that brave-hearted band.
Who fight for the flage of their own native land.
Sic Semper Tyrannis, is this your proud boast?
And fear ye the charge of the Northerner's host?
No — up with her flag, see her sons rally round;
"Let Virginia be free" be the heart-stirring sound.
