...rps of Longstreet and Ewell by no means insignificant bodies of troops.
Ewell had the advance, and Longstreet brought up the rear.
Ewell's corps was the one that suffered the most, because it was Grant 's purpose to cut off the retreat of Lee and compel a surrender.
The 2d and 6th Corps up to this point had been following the rear of the retreating Confederates.
