ὅτι τοσούτων ὄντων . . . ἐπιτηδεύοντες: the words τοσούτων ὄντων τὸ πλῆθος καὶ τῶν ἄλλων (= ἰδιωτῶν, which some MSS. read) καὶ τῶν ἀρχόντων must be taken together as partitive genitives dependent on οἱ μὲν . . . οἱ δέ, ‘among the great number both of private individuals and of rulers, some . . . others . . .’ Less good sense is obtained if τοσούτων ὄντων τὸ πλῆθος be made to refer to τῶν λεγομένων, ‘when my precepts are so numerous.’
