Charleston to be burned

--A Federal Canard.--The following dispatch is published in the St. Louis Republican, of the 4th:

New York, Dec. 3.--Mr. Butterfield, mate of the brig Granada, who has been a prisoner at Charleston, has arrived, and reports the forts on Phœnix and other Islands were evacuated and blown up November 12. Great excitement prevailed at Charleston, and a meeting was held as to the propriety of burning or surrendering the city. The Mayor was in favor of surrendering, and so were the people generally, but the Governor said it must be burned.
