Belief in honor, justice, right and truth.
For this faith we fought; our brothers died for it; we have stood fast by it, and by it we will be preserved from the trials and temptations that are to come.
Some time ago the War
startled the world with an epigram: ‘We Germans fear God and nothing else in the world.’
But we can say with perfect simplicity and earnestness: ‘We Confederates, men and women, love God and fear nothing in this world nor the next, in the past nor in the future; for the past we have made glorious, the future we will render illustrious.
This world the indomitable soul will conquer; the next inexhaustible love will save.’
At the conclusion of this fine effort the monument was unveiled by Captain J. N. Barney
, an ex-Confederate navy officer who served with distinction throughout the war.
