VXACONA
(Red Hill) Shropshire, England.
Site on Watling Street on high ground overlooking the
Shropshire plain. The name appears in the
Antonine Itinerary. Aerial photographs show a number of military
establishments imposed one upon the other, N of the
Roman road. It would have been a good site for a signal
station, but there may also be a small fort. A settlement
developed along Watling Street about which nothing is
known. There are, however, crop-marks of a small, single-ditched enclosure probably 4th c. burgus like others on this road.
