εὐθὺς should probably be joined with the participle, ‘immediately that D arrived.’ The position of the word, however, is somewhat against this.

παρεξελθόντος ‘having completed (ἐξ-) his march along the coast.’.

ἐν τῷ Ἑλλησπόντῳ. e)n as Poppo observes, because ‘the Hellespont’ is the name of a district.

Λάμψακος a colony from Phocaea and Miletus (Strabo, p. 589), about twenty miles from Abydus. The city had been attached to Atheus since B.C. 479.

ἁρπαγὴν ποησάμενος. Cf. c. 41, § 2, τὴν χώραν . . λείαν ἐποεῖτο.

Σηστὸν, about four miles from Abydus obliquely across the Hellespont. It was regarded by the Athenians as the key of the strait (Arist. Rhet. iii. 10, § 7).

ἥν ποτε Μῆδοι εἷχον The τότε of most other MSS. than Vat. will hardly stand. Though τότε is often used of a matter previously mentioned, ‘at the time above stated’ (cf. c. 20, § 1), it cannot be referred so far back as to i. 89 (Σηστὸν ἐπολιόρκουν Μήδων ἐχόντων), which is the last reference to the possession by the Medes. A rendering ‘on the well-known occasion’ would be far-fetched. For the fact cf. Hdt. ix. 115.
