ναῦς μὲν ὀλίγας . . . τὴν μέντοι ‘though . . yet . . .’.

βραχείας κ.τ.λ. = ‘gave them but a short distance to cover before reaching shelter.’


τὰ κατὰ βραχὺ σφάλματα ‘their slight reverses in detail,’ lit. ‘which had happened a little at a time,’ viz. in c. 42, § 4, at Syme; in c. 95, § 7, at Eretria; and in c. 102, § 2, at Elaius.


οὗ τὸ Κυνὸς σῆμα presumably the same as the Ἑκάβης μνημεῖον, Diod. xiii. 40.


ἀνέλπιστον note the position: ‘never having expected to hear of this good fortune.’

ἐπί τε ταῖς . . . ἐπερρώσθησαν, καὶ ἐνόμισαν . . .

δυνατὰ not impersonal, but in agreement with τὰ πράγματα. Cf. iii. 86, εἰ σφίσι δυνατὰ εἴη τὰ ἐν τῇ Σικελίᾳ πράγματα ὑποχείρια γενέσθαι.
