ἐπ᾽ αὐτῆς either (1) simply ‘on board it’: cf. vi. 61, ὁ Ἀλκιβιάδης ἐπὶ πλοίου ἐπεραιώθη, or (2) ‘in command of it’: cf. Hdt. v. 109, ἐπ᾽ οὗ ἐτάχθημεν, and such phrases as ὁ ἐπὶ τῆς διοικήσεως. Add e.g. iv. 11, ναύαρχος δὲ αὐτῶν ἐπέπλει Θρασυμηλίδας. But Chaereas seems not to have been a ‘Paralus’ himself, but only to have been sent with the ship to aid the mission. Otherwise ἄνδρα Ἀθηναῖον would be useless after c. 73, § 5. Moreover, if he had been in charge, his escape (διαλαθών πως) would have been unlikely.

ἄνδρα Ἀθηναῖον i.e. not a Samian.

ἐς τὴν μετάστασιν the reaction from oligarchy which was taking place, ‘the (attempted) revolution.’ Chaereas is one of those alluded to above (c. 73, § 4), οἳ ἐδόκουν μάλιστα ἐναντιοῦσθαι τοῖς ξυνεστῶσιν.

ἀπαγγελοῦντα with Χαιρέαν only. Cf. c. 63, § 1 for similar constructions.

τῶν μὲν Παράλων κ.τ.λ. The clause which properly answers to this is ὁ δὲ Χαιρέας κ.τ.λ. Another clause with δὲ intervenes, but that δὲ is merely connective.

ἐς ἄλλην στρατιῶτιν ναῦν. ἄλλην is appositive: ‘into another vessel, one which was a troop-ship’ Cf. ii. 31, χωρὶς δὲ ὁ ἄλλος ὅμιλος ψιλῶν οὐκ ὀλίγος, ‘and, besides these, the light-armed as well.’ By being placed in a troop-ship they would be secured from rising. These Πάραλοι appear again c. 86, § 9.

αὐτῶν ipsorum, by position: sc. τῶν στρατιωτῶν.

διανοοῦνται with change of subject. Cf. c. 44, § 2, ἐξεφόβησαν τοὺς πολλοὺς καὶ ἔφευγον.

εἴρξειν For the fut. with διανοοῦνται sce note on c. 2, § 1, ξυμπροθυμηθέντες ἀπαλλάξεσθαι.

τεθνήκωσι the perfect of the immediately realised consequence. Cf. c. 66, § 2, ἐτεθνήκει.

ἐπικαταψευδόμενος. ἐπι- of addition. Cf. ἐπιθεραπεύων, c. 47, § 1.
