SCAMNUM
(Muro Tenente) Brindisi, Apulia, Italy.
An ancient Messapic center on the plain of
Mesagne 2 km from Latiano. It is now being systematically explored. Its circuit wall is known; a large number of
tombs have come to light dating from the 6th c. to the
4th c. B.C. with Messapic inscriptions. The Roman ruins
of this native center are believed to correspond to those
of ancient Scamnum, which is cited in the
Peutinger
Table along the Via Appia on the Taranto-Brindisi road,
as the last statio before Brindisi.
