Indictment for treason.
--In the District Court of the
Confederate States, now in session in
Mobile, the
Grand Jury has found a true bill against
Eugenio Pacolini,
Peter Pioch and Vincennes Calduco, charged with treason against the
Confederate States.
The indictment, in substance, charges the accused with having traitorously carried and delivered a cargo of fruits and vegetables, on the schooner
Hortense, from
Mobile to the enemy's fleet off
Pensacola.
The
Judge, in his charge to the
Grand Jury, stated the law to be that furnishing provisions, or important intelligence to the enemy, was treasonable.--The penalty for that offence, on conviction, is death.
This case should be a warning to all our citizens, and especially to those living on the coast.
We are informed that the parties accused in this case assert that they intended to carry their cargo to
Pensacola, but were stopped by the fleet, and the cargo forcibly taken from them by the enemy.
To enable them to make out this defence by evidence, if possible, the trial of the case was continued, at their instance, until the next term of the court.
The accused, being in custody, were committed to jail to await their trial.
This is the first indictment for treason against the
Confederate States that has come to our knowledge.--
