[917] τοῦ λέγοντος Plat. Gorg. 508d “εἰμὶ δὲ ἐπὶ τῷ βουλομένῳ, ὥσπερ οἱ ἄτιμοι τοῦ ἐθέλοντος, ἄντε τύπτειν βούληται, κ.τ.λ.” —as outlaws are at the mercy of the first comer: Soph. OC 752 “τοὐπιόντος ἁρπάσαι”.ἢν φόβους λέγῃ has better MS. authority than εἰ λέγοι, and is also simpler: the latter would be an opt. like Soph. Aj. 520 “ἀνδρί τοι χρεὼν (”= χρὴ) ι μνήμην προσεῖναι, τερπνὸν εἴ τί που πάθοι: cp. Soph. Aj. 1344: Soph. Ant. 666. But the statement of abstract possibility is unsuitable here. εἰ ... λέγῃ has still less to commend it.
