Wuestemann quotes a fragment from a work by one Melampus addressed to Ptolemy Philad. ὀφθαλμὸς δεξιὸς ἐὰν ἅλληται, ἐχθροὺς ὑποχειρίους ἕξει. The goatherd is encouraged by the sign to believe that he will see Amaryllis, and resolves to try to entice her by a song.
