Historical Parallel.

--It is evident that the South is prepared to make a unanimous, bloody and prolonged resistance to the ‘"subjugation"’ policy of the Republicans. It is reported that Gen. Davis was asked, ‘"What if you should be defeated at Manassas Junction, or wherever else you have resolved to make a desperate stand against invasion?"’ and that he replied, ‘"There will be so few of us left after such a defeat, that the rest will be a matter of little consequence."’ This reply, if really uttered, has a classical precedent, to be found in the interview between Brutus and Cassius before the battle of Phillippi. ‘"Either we shall be conquerors ourselves,"’ said Cassius to his patriot friend, ‘"or we shall have no cause to fear those who are so."’--New York Daily News.
