[*] 94.8. centum pagos （see 10 12）: there is probably some confusion here with the ancient German institution of the Hundred, a division of the population giving its name to a district of territory. Each hundred seems to have sent 1000 men （singula milia） to the army. The term early lost its numerical value, and became a mere local designation.
