ἐγχειρήσειν—
ἐγχειρῶ is used by Xenophon with the dat. in the sense of attacking, but not elsewhere in Thucydides: Krüger proposes
ἐπιχειρήσειν, as in
vi. 90.
περιαγγέλλοντες—‘carrying round notice of the armistice’.
ἡ μὲν στρατιά—Brasidas at once sent back the army (ch. 121, 11) to Torone, while he himself remained in the city with the Lacedaemonian garrison. The next clause implies that he accepted an official notice of the armistice.
ἀνήγγελλον—ἀναγγέλλω is properly to ‘take back word’; Classen therefore takes its meaning to be that the envoys who had already announced the truce to Brasidas, came again to report the general acceptance of the arrangement (
τὴν ξυνθήκην). The words of the text scarcely warrant this view; and it is not necessary to press the meaning of
ἀναγγέλλω. There is however a slight awkwardness in the arrangement of the clauses.
τοῖς μὲν ἄλλοις κατῄνει—καταινῶ is nowhere else found with a simple dat., though it is sometimes used as in
Soph. O.C. 432,
τοῦτ᾽ ἐμοὶ κατῄνεσεν. Here
τοῖς ἄλλοις seems to be the ethical dative, ‘in the case of the others he agreed’, i.e. agreed to accept them as allies of Sparta.
ὡς πρότερον—sc.
ἀφεστήκοιεν. ἀφίει—so
viii. 41:

περὶ αὐτῶν—neut.: ch. 18, 6, note.
ἀντεποιοῦντο—‘claimed’, as against the Athenians.
δίκῃ κρίνεσθαι—of persons, ‘to have their claims legally decided’, i.e. to submit to arbitration: cf.
i. 28,
εἰ δέ τι ἀντιποιοῦνται, δίκας ἤθελον δοῦναι.
ὀργὴν ποιούμενοι—
Hdt. iii. 25,
ὀργὴν ποιησάμενος. For
εἰ=‘that’ cf. ch. 85, 23: here of course it gives the actual reason, but less positively and directly than
ὅτι: see Lid. and Scott.
ἤδη—to be taken with
ἀξιοῦσι. The word stands out of place for the sake of emphasis, the idea being that there is indeed cause for indignation if the spirit of revolt has now reached even the islanders. Possibly however
ὄντες ought to be omitted.
ἀνωφελεῖ—predicate,=
ἀνωφελεῖ οὔσῃ, ‘useless as it was’.
εἶχε—with adv. of manner
ᾖ. ἐδικαίουν—‘maintained’, ‘claimed’:
v. 26,
εἴ τις μὴ ἀξιώσει...οὐκ ὀρθῶς δικαιώσει.
Κλέωνος γνώμῃ πεισθέντες—πεισθἐντες is absent from one manuscript, and possibly ought to be omitted,
Θεμιστοκλέους γνώμῃ (
i. 90)=‘on the motion of Themistocles’, being the usual form of expression. In
i. 78 however we have
ἀλλοτρίαις γνώμαις καὶ ἐγκλημασι πεισθέντες.
ἐξελεῖν—‘to take’: ch. 69, 6.
