... in the Union army. General Nelson, who had advanced against him with two Ohio and detachments of several Kentucky regiments, with a part of his force encountered a large detachment thrown forward by Williams to cover his retreat, in a strong position on Ivy Creek.
After a well-contested engagement Williams was forced from his position, and retired through Pound Gap [see map, page 394]
