§ 47. Evergus would have easily got off if he had known the precise charge he would have to defend himself against. But a ‘mining-suit’ was trumped up against him; and as other counts (§ 45) were added to rouse the indignation of the jury, he was thus unfairly condemned.

ἔχειν Here for δύνασθαι. With χαλεπὸν, ἦν is to be repeated from above.

ὀργὴ The resentment they felt about the ἐπίκληροι.—ἐφ᾽ κ.τ.λ. ‘found him guilty of the charge upon which they sat in judgment.’ Kennedy.
