καὶ αὐτοῖς—the dative is put early to contrast it with οἱ δ᾽ Ἀθηναῖοι below.

αὐτόθεν — from Achaea, which had originally been neutral, but in 417 joined Sparta.

ἀνεχοὐσαις—see L and S., B.; cf. Herod. VII. 123 πάσης πῆς Παλλήνης ἀνέχει μάλιστα. The meaning is common in Pausanias.

Πολυάνθης—prob. the same as the P. to whom, according to Xenophon, Tithraustes sent a bribe in order to bring about a war against Sparta.
