καὶ—and so. ἐξ ἀναγκαίου—in desperate straits; best taken alone as an adverbial phrase. (Some edd. make ἀν. fem. agreeing with διανοίας, but τοιαυτης is then very awkward.) Adverbial phrases with ἐκ are very common. τοιαύτης—sc. ἐκ, from the nature of their plan, i.e. considering the difficulties that it involved.
