ὼς . . . καὶ—see on c. 43.1. καὶ ὁπωσοῦν—with ἐπιτήδειος. ἡλικίας μετέχων—i.e. not altogether ἐν τῷ ἀχρείῳ τῆς ἡλικίας (II. 44.4), and so fit for military service. This must mean that non-combatants were to be used, for none of the regular troops could have been otherwise than ἡ. μετέχων. ἐπιτήδειος—opposite of ἀχρεῖος or ἄχρηστος, in a military sense.
