ἐπηρμένοι ἦσαν—felt eneouraged. μὴ ἀνιέναι τὰ τῶν Ἀ—not to relax their hold upon the A., i e. to keep them busy instead of disregarding them. Hence—§ 2—τὰς ναῦς ἐπλήρουν. Cf. VI. 18 τοῖς μὲν ἐπιβουλεύειν, τοὺς δὲ μὴ ἀνιέναι; II. 13 τὰ τῶν ξυμμάχων διὰ χειρὸς ἔχειν. αὐτῶν κατεγνωκότων—since they had themselves come to the conclusion that they were no longer superior to them (σφῶν). καταγιγνώσκειν is used for forming an adverse opinion. κατάγνωσις has a similar sense.
