The gen. is commoner than the accus., which is also used in these military phrases; Xen. Hel. VI 4, 12 ἐπὶ πεντήκοντα ἀσπίδων συνεστραμμένοι; Aristoph. Frag. ἵστασθ᾽ ἐφεξῆς ἐπὶ τρεῖς ἀσπίδας.
