κήρυκας. Menelaüs is attended by two heralds, their presence marking the solemn character of his mission. So in the Iliad the chiefs deputed to intercede with Achilles are accompanied by two heralds (9. 170), whom Eustathius (780. 46) compares to the “ἀργὰ πρόσωπα” of the theatre.
