σκότος, the darkness of death, as the gates of Hades are “σκότου πύλαι” ( Eur. Hec. 1): ἔρεβος, as in Soph. O. C. 1389τὸ Ταρτάρου στυγνὸν...ἔρεβος”. So, too, in Il. 8. 368 it is merely a term for ‘the nether gloom’ (“ἐξ ἐρέβευς ἄξοντα”), not a definitely named region, Erebos.

ὡς ἐμοί: for this limiting force of “ὡς”, cp. O. C. 20μακρὰν...ὡς γέροντι”: Plat. Soph.p. 226 C “ταχεῖαν, ὡς ἐμοί, σκέψιν”.
