τῆς νῦν φθιμένης νυκτὸς, thus placed at the beginning of the sentence, indicates the time to which the whole following statement refers. As the rumours began only at daylight, the reference is, in strictness, to the moment denoted by “ἐπιβάντ᾽ὀλέσαι.

ἐπὶ δυσκλείᾳ, for, tending to, our disgrace; cp. Her. 1. 68ἐπὶ κακῷ”, Her. 4. 164ἐπὶ διαφθορῇ”.
