τοῖς πολλοῖσι γὰρ “κ.τ.λ.” This is a ground for “τὸ φιλεῖν ὡς μισήσοντα”, but not (directly, at least) for the converse; and bewrays what is really uppermost in his mind. Bias , acc. to Diogenes Laertius (1. 5 § 87), gave a similar reason,—“τοὺς γὰρ πλείστους εἶναι κακούς. ” ἑταιρείας has better authority here than ἑταιρίας. Some have supposed that “ἑταιρεία” was the form used in the sense of factio, or party ‘association,’ and “ἑταιρία” in that of amicitia; but there is really no good evidence for this. In Thuc. 3. 82§ 5, where the word has its political sense, the best MSS. give “ἑταιρίας διαλυτής”.
