τοῖς πολλοῖσι γὰρκ.τ.λ.” This is a ground for “τὸ φιλεῖν ὡς μισήσοντα”, but not (directly, at least) for the converse; and bewrays what is really uppermost in his mind. Bias , acc. to Diogenes Laertius (1. 5 § 87), gave a similar reason,—“τοὺς γὰρ πλείστους εἶναι κακούς.

ἑταιρείας has better authority here than ἑταιρίας. Some have supposed that “ἑταιρεία” was the form used in the sense of factio, or party ‘association,’ and “ἑταιρία” in that of amicitia; but there is really no good evidence for this. In Thuc. 3. 82§ 5, where the word has its political sense, the best MSS. give “ἑταιρίας διαλυτής”.
