After the Laconian had spoken to this effect, the multitude suddenly changed its mind and approved the proposal of Diocles.1 Consequently the generals2 and the allies3 were forthwith put to death, and the Athenians were consigned to the quarries; and at a later time such of them as possessed a better education were rescued from there by the younger men and thus got away safe, but practically all the rest ended their lives pitiably amid the hardships of this place of confinement.
