In Italy the Romans, who were in the eleventh year of their siege of the Veians, appointed Marcus Furius to be dictator and Publius Cornelius to be master of the horse. These restored the spirit of the troops and captured Veii1 by constructing an underground passage; the city they reduced to slavery, selling the inhabitants with the other booty.

1 The fullest account of the capture of this city after a ten-year siege is in Livy 5.19 ff.
