[1044] αὐτὰρ ἔπειτα: these words have been generally suspected and variously emended. The whole line could well be done without. If the text is sound, αὐτάρ must be used taking up the previous ἀλλά, in the same way as δέ is used after parentheses, and ἔπειτα must mean 'forthwith' (Hesych. ἔπειτα᾽ τάχιστα). This meaning may be found in 558 supr., and in Il. 18. 357 Schol. A.B. explain ἔπειτα by παραυτίκα, νῦν.
