[238] ἀνήιον: 'put out to sea'; cf. Od. 10. 332, ἐκ Τροίης ἀνιόντα (ἀνα- as in ἀναπλεἰν, ἀνάγεσθαι).

οὐδέ κεφαίης κ.τ.λ.: 'nor wouldst thou say so much that it was an armament of ships, as that an innumerable company of birds in flocks were screaming o'er the waves.' For τόσον followed by an adversative particle cf. Il. 21. 275, ἄλλος δ᾽ οὔ τίς μοι τόσον αἴτιος Οὐρανιώνων Ἀλλὰ φίλη μήτηρ.

οἰωνῶν: cf. Il. 2. 459, τῶν δ᾽ ὥς τ᾽ ὀρνίθων πετεηνῶν ἔθνεα πολλά, κ.τ.λ.
