[712] 'But she herself, at the hearth within the house, burnt the sacrificial cakes and the expiatory offerings, uttering the prayers which accompany libations made without wine.'

νηφαλίῃσιν: these wineless libations consisted of water, and honey mixed with milk (μελίκρατον); cf. Aesch. Eum. 107, χοάς τ᾽ ἀοίνους, νηφάλια μειλίγματα: Soph. O.C. 100, 481: Poll. 6. 26, νηφαλιεύειντὸ χρῆσθαι θυσίαις ἀοίνοις, ὧν τὰς ἐναντίας θυσίας οἰνοσπόνδους ἔλεγον.
