3. τῇ μάχῃ: Chaeronea. —ἐν τῷ θεῷ...τέλος: cf. πέρας and δαίμων in § 192.7, 8. See Il. VII. 101, αὐτὰρ ὕπερθεν νίκης πείρατ᾽ ἔχονται ἐν ἀθανάτοισι θεοῖσιν.

6. φιλοπόνως ὑπὲρ δύναμιν, i.e. with greater labour than my strength warranted: cf. §§ 160.5, 218.9.

8. ἐνεστησάμην, undertook (in- stituted): cf. § 4.11.—καὶ ἀναγκαῖα, and necessary too, added after the verb for emphasis. Blass remarks that the orator has not yet attained the height from which he speaks in §§ 199 ff.
