1. εἰ...εἰπεῖν: he makes this slight apology for asserting even the following claim to be compared with the great men of old. 3. ἐπαινουμένων: imperfect, like συκοφαντούντων (5), as shown by τότε. 6. διασύροντες...ἐπῄνουν: I keep διασύροντες, with Σ and L, but omit δὲ before πρότερον (7). διασύρω, ridicule, is a favourite word with Demosthenes: it occurs elsewhere in this speech in §§ 27.6, 126.7, 180.3, 218.10, 299.2, 323.7, 8, always in the same sense. 7. τότε: with ὄντας.
