τῶν Ἑλλήνων—i.e. the Siceliots, whereas the Sicels are βάρβαροι. ξύμμαχοι—“the name allies shows that they remained distinct though subject communities” (Freeman). αὐτοῖς—with ξυνεπολέμουν. Ἴνησσαν—identical with Aetna, not far from Catana. It had been an important Sicel stronghold.
