ἡλικία αὐτή—‘and men of the same efficiency.’ The phrase is so compressed that it has become obscure. Thuc. means οὗτοι (οἳ) τοσοῦτοι (ἦσαν) τὸ πλῆθος καὶ ἡλικία αὐτὴ (ἦσαν); and ἡλικία is collective. It is impossible to render ‘in the prime of life too,’ because it is obvious that all who were serving must be part of the ἡλικία, or those of military age.
