μέχρι—c. 10, 3. αὐτοῖς—ethic, but in unusual position. οἱ δέ—the τοξόται: an epic and Ionic usage, since the subject is not a new one. The nse occurs occasionally in Attic prose. Thompson2 At. Syn. § 47, note. αὐτοί—the main body, in contrast with οὗτοι the archers. καί before ἐπὶ πολύ is ‘quite.’ ὁ ἡγεμών—“the wonderful precision with which the [guide] possessing local knowledge selects the proper path is only equalled by the ease with which he loses it when working in an unfamiliar region. Chromon was, perhaps, a shepherd picked up at Eupalion” (Woodhouse).
